Last week, we welcomed Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, the Governor of Tasmania, along with Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO, Mayor of West Tamar Municipality, Christina Holmdahl and CEO of West Tamar Council Kristen Desmond. The visit was part of a wider tour of the West Tamar Municipality, and we were thrilled to be included in this opportunity.
Our Student Leaders, Angus, Cohen, Mia, Milly, and Tayla hosted our visitors and proudly led them on a tour of our school which included visits to 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 classes, as well as our Library, grounds, and pool. Students are to be commended on their efforts to engage our visitors and showcase our school proudly. Her Excellency and Professor Chalmers were impressed by students engaged in learning during class visits, and our expansive and well-kept grounds and facilities.

Mid-Year Reporting and Family Engagement Meetings
We place high value on family partnerships and the role you play in your child’s education. As such, reporting conversations will be available during Week 9 and 10 of Term 2. This is an opportunity to share information about your child and discuss their academic, social, and emotional development. Information has been sent home about booking appointments to meet with your child’s teacher.
Reports will not be sent home. They will be available for collection from the office on the afternoon of your scheduled meeting time.
Please contact the office if you need support to book your appointment or follow the link to make your appointment.
Mid-Year Reports will contain your child’s current ratings against the Australian Curriculum or your child’s individual learning plan and information about their attitude, effort, and behaviour. In line with the DECYP reporting requirements there will not be a written comment.
Cross Country
Last week, nine students travelled to Symmons Plains to participate in the Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country Championships. Year 3/4 students raced a 2km track, whilst 5/6s had a 3km course. Both courses were challenging with undulating trails and tricky surfaces. Students were outstanding with their effort with many races having fields of 240+ participants. Well done everyone.
Readers’ Cup
This term students from Years 5 and 6 participated in a unique extended learning opportunity called the Reader’s Cup. Reader’s Cup is a reading competition where teams of up to six students take on the challenge to collaboratively read 5 set books over 5 weeks, then complete a Quiz about the books along with a short Creative Presentation about one of the books in a school-based competition.
Two teams participated in our school-based competition where a winning team was decided. On the 20th June, that winning team ‘Brilliant Bookworms” then competed in the inter-school competition with other Northern Tasmania Primary Schools held at Hagley Primary School. Well done to all students who participated this year.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway, and we look forward to seeing our students join in the reading fun. Information was sent home last week to families to outline the challenge which will coincide with our own Beaconsfield Primary Reading Challenge. As an incentive to take part there will be random draws of book vouchers on conclusion of assemblies each fortnight.
The Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage children and young people to develop a love of reading. Reading is important for many reasons: learning, adventure, escaping, but most of all for FUN!
School Dance Party
To conclude the Term, next Friday the Student Leaders will host a Dance Party for all students. There will be two sessions for dancing, games and music – K-2 after recess and 3-6 following lunch. Students are asked to wear ‘free dress – party’ and please donate a non-perishable food item which will be donated to our local Child and Family Learning Centre.
Winter Sport Year 4 - 6
Winter Sport will commence in Term 3 for students in Years 4-6. Sports available are mixed football, soccer, hockey and netball. Students have nominated their preferences in class and this will be followed up with a letter outlining the equipment/clothing required, code of conduct for students and families, along with the roster. All matches will be hosted in George Town at Blue Gum Park or South George Town Primary School. All Tamar Schools will travel to George Town to participate in the roster.

NAIDOC Week
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
Digital Skills for Families
Support your child’s online learning at home
Digital skills are critical to every child’s success, but supporting online learning can be overwhelming.
The Digital skills for families team are delivering a program to help Tasmanian families support online learning at home. Spending time online at home gives children an opportunity to practice what they are learning at school. Positive home environments help children develop the skills and independence they need to succeed in a digital future.
Learn about communicating online with schools, digital education at school and how to support online learning at home.
Digital skills for families is offering free:
information sessions
workshops
one-to-one help
In libraries, schools and community locations statewide.
Due to the student Dance Party on Friday next week, assembly will be held on Thursday at 11.40am.
Launching into Learning Programs at BPS
Hot Lunches
There will be no Hot Lunches next Wednesday or Thursday. Hot Lunches will re-commence 31 July second week, Term 3.
Lost Property
We have a lot of lost property in the baskets at the moment, including lunch boxes and drink bottles.
If your child is missing something please check the two lost property baskets before the end of Term.

OPTIONAL ADVANCED SAFEGUARDING TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE IN OUR SCHOOLS
Earlier this year, the Department for Education, Children and Young People rolled out Safeguarding Training for staff, volunteers, and service providers.
This training was compulsory for everyone as part of our ongoing commitment to safeguard Tasmanian children and young people and prevent them from harm.
The department has recently released additional advanced Safeguarding training modules. These are optional and are aimed at anyone who volunteers at a DECYP site, external providers, and anyone in the community who wants to learn more about how to keep children and young people safe.
Note: If you require additional assistance to access the modules, please take a look at the FAQs about technical support and additional assistance, which are also on the department’s Safeguarding page.
